Chainstitch, be it in wool or
silk, is done by hook rather than a needle. It covers a much larger surface area per stitch than needlework in the same amount of time. Continuous stitches (giving the
name chain-stitch) are used to cover the entire
surface of the fabric, the figures or motifs are worked in striking colors, the background
mostly in a
single color.
Chainstitch work is done with a hook in long flowing designs. The embroidery
is done allover on a cotton 'dosooti' fabric background about 2 mm thick. Embroidery is done is wool
using 2-ply yarn. ArtSilk yarn is also used in
the embroidery and the rug looks like a carpet in which the pile is substituted
by the texture. Chainstitch rugs can be used either as area rugs or
wall hangings and are available in floral, kelim, bird/ animal and modern designs. These rugs are supported with cotton 'dosooti' lining to add to
the durability. Chainstitch rugs come in many different sizes 2’x3’, 2.5'x4', 3’x5’, 6’x4’, 6’x9’
and 9'x12'. Other sizes may be
made specifically on customer request. |
