Crewel Fabric Bedspreads Crewel Work is a special kind of embroidery done with a pointed hook on thick Cotton 'Dosooti' fabric hand-woven in Kashmir. Bedspreads embroidered in crewel work are of two types: one uses the cotton fabric used for crewel drapes and the other one uses a much lighter soft-feel cotton. Soft cotton bedspreads can also be used as bedsheets. Crewel Work Bedspreads come in a range of embroidery patterns and colors; the cost of fabric being determined by the amount of embroidery work on it and whether single or double-ply wool is worked on the fabric. Rows of chain stitch done with a pointed hook form solid patterns usually rotating from the center and creating an embossed effect to add richness to the textile. Crewel Work is done on the thick material popularly used for furnishing and usually carries flowing floral and creeper designs. The thick material includes hand-woven Cotton "Dosooti" Fabric, Cotton Duck, Linen, Jute, etc. The Crewel Work embroidery, done in thick woolen yarn by a pointed crochet, provides a very dazzling and durable material for drapes and upholsteries. All embroidery is done by hand in either single or double ply wool. Designs are available in assortment of colors ranging from a single color to multicolor embroidery. The price depends directly on the amount of embroidery work. Bedspreads come mostly in kingsize (109 x 90 inches). However, smaller or bigger sizes are available on order as well. Crewel work is similar to chain stitch, but here motifs are mainly stylized flowers which do not cover the entire area. Wool is invariably used in crewel work work and color is not as elaborate as chain stitch work.
