Crewel Fabric is a hand-crocheted embroidered
fabric, mostly available on cotton backgrounds; however it is also made on
organza silk, linen, cotton velvet or jute as well. It is used for both drapery
and upholstery purposes depending on whether it is upholstery grade. Organza
Silk would however not qualify for upholstery jobs.
Embroidered crewel fabric is commonly made into
curtains, bedspreads and cushion covers. Crewel fabric may be used to cover
chairs or sofas and even made into table runners. All our fabrics in cotton and
cotton-velvet are Upholstery grade. Crewel fabric finds use in
making apparels also.
Colors add to the variety of crewel fabric;
besides white, you may find black, navy, maroon, cream, beige and other
background colors used. Embroidery may be single color, 3 shades of one color or
a range of colors (multicolor).
Embroidery yarn is mostly wool; either 1-ply
or 2-ply wool is used for embroidery. 1-ply wool embroidery is cheaper and
less durable in comparison while 2-ply wool embroidery is costlier and provides a
better finish as it is finer of the two covering lesser surface per
stitch. ArtSilk (synthetic silk) is also employed
sometimes for embroidery yarn.
Prices per yard may start as low
as 10 US Dollars per yard (for cotton fabrics) with no possible guess on a
maximum, depending on the fabric, amount of embroidery work and the embroidery yarn.
Crewel Fabric is available in many widths
with 52 inches being the most popular. 56 and 44 are the other widths available.
Length is 20 to 35 yards per bolt.
