Crewel work is similar to chain
stitch, but here motifs are mainly stylized flowers which do not cover the
entire area. Wool is invariably used in crewel work work and color is not as
elaborate as chain stitch work. The fabric is available in bolts and makes good
household furnishings.
Kashmiri Crewel fabric manufacturers have employed dozens of variations of the
Tree of Life design, both in colors and patterns. Crewel work fabrics are
available in a range of background fabrics. Cotton, organza, jute and velvet
are some of the commonly available crewel work fabric backgrounds in the market.
Background colors for Crewel fabrics can be as varied with white being the
dominant color. Blue, Beige, Brown, Maroon, Burgundy, Cream are the ones you may
come across while visiting a Crewel fabric store. Most single-ply crewel upholstery fabrics sell
for a price of $15 - $30 per yard when brand new. Prices for
Crewel upholstery fabrics may be as high as hundreds of dollars per yard; such
crewels have very lavish embroidery work and are embroidered in
double-ply wool.
