Chainstitch, be it in wool,
silk or cotton is done by hook rather than a needle. The hook is referred as an
"Aari"; it covers a much larger area than needlework in the same amount of time
and has the same quality. All the embroidery is executed on white cotton fabric,
pre-shrunk by the manufacturers. Tiny stitches are used to cover the entire
area, the figures or motifs are worked in striking colors, the background in a
single color comprising of series of coin sized concentric circles. These
circles impart dynamism and a sense of movement to the design.
Natively known as "jalakdozi", this work (chainstitch) is done with a hook in
long flowing designs. The embroidery is done allover on a Hessian or hand-woven
cloth base. The designs range from floral patterns to animal and human forms
traced by a designer while the craftsman embroiders in two-ply or three-ply
yarns. Silk yarn is also used in the embroidery and the rug looks like a carpet
in which the pile is substituted by the texture. The craft is also available on
cushion covers in various sizes (12 and 16 inches).
Cushion covers are modestly priced at 5.9 USD to 7.9 USD, with wool costing less than silk embroidered
cushion covers.
