Crewel fabric is traditionally hand-embroidered in Kashmir using wool and silk yarn, it is hand-crocheted on a thick cotton "dusooti" cloth to produce vibrant motifs. Crewel fabrics are highly durable and are known to last many years if cared for properly. Crewel fabrics are used for drapery and upholstery - made into curtains, sofa covers, chair upholstery etc. Crewel fabric is available by the yard and is also used to make cushions, pillow shams and throws. Besides cotton, other base fabrics like velvet, linen, jute and silk organza are also used for making crewel fabrics. Crewel fabrics come in a variety of designs and colorways. Off-white is the most common background with shades of blue, green and red also used. Multicolor wool embroidery and neutrals are worked on these fabrics. The fabric width is 52 to 60 inches, linen being the widest fabric available. Bolts of fabric are usually 20 to 22 yards long, custom lengths of upto 40 yards per bolt can be made.
